Top Tens 3-5

3 x 60 min for Discovery Wings

Following the success of Top Tens 1-2, which ranked the greatest Fighter Aircraft and Tanks of all time, the show returns with 3 one hour programmes analysing and ranking the greatest Bomber Aircraft, Fighting Ships and Military Vehicles.

Top Ten Bomber Aircraft looks at these awesome flying machines and decides which earns the title of the best strategic bomber of all time.

Shortlisted by pilots, aviation experts and historians ten outstanding bomber designs from the First World War to the present day will be analysed to determine which has had most impact on the history of aerial warfare.

How will the 100 mile an hour bombers of World War One compare to today’s stealthy space age designs? Will the mighty B52 come out ahead of its ancestor the B-17 Flying Fortress? And which bomber will be the World’s Number One?

Our panel of strategic bombing experts will examine British, German, Soviet and American designs. Technological innovation, payload and above all combat performance in the greatest aerial battles in history will determine their final choice.

Top Ten Fighting Ships goes full steam ahead into the world of warship design to decide which earns the title of ‘the best of the best’.

Each design will be assessed by a team composed of military analysts, naval historians and present-day warship designers to determine its place in our Top Ten list.

Will sea-going behemoths like the Bismarck drive Fletcher class destroyers out of the list? Can the high tech but untested guided missile cruisers of the Ticonderoga class really be serious contenders against HMS Warspite with her countless battle honors and service in two World Wars? And is the brand new stealth corvette HMS Visby really the forerunner of a whole new breed of warship?

Our experts will examine British American, German and Swedish designs, comparing their firepower, armour, speed and operational success. Only one of the ten selected designs can earn the title of the ultimate Fighting Ship.

Top Ten Infantry Fighting Vehicles looks at ten great designs that revolutionised warfare by carrying infantrymen into the thick of the fight.

Chosen by a panel of leading military analysts, historians and combat vehicle experts, each design will be analysed to judge its impact on military operations and success at protecting infantrymen as they ‘Advance to Contact’.

Can the lumbering half-tracks of the Second World War compare with today’s high speed designs? Is the fully armed ‘infantry fighting vehicle’ better for the job than older armored personnel carriers? And how does the US Army’s new but still controversial wheeled Stryker vehicle measure up against fully tracked systems?

Our experts will look at American, British, Soviet, Canadian and Israeli designs. Innovation, protection, mobility and overall battlefield performance will determine the place each machine occupies in the final Top Ten list.
