SPEED MACHINES
8 x 1 hours for Channel 4

Channel Four Commissioning Editor Hamish Mykura commissioned Flashback Television to produce a series of 8 x 1 hour programmes on the history of speed. Each episode tells the story of a race to be the fastest and to break speed records at different points of time across the 19th and 20th centuries.

The programmes focus on:

  • The race between the Normandie and Queen Mary for the Blue Riband across the Atlantic
  • The competition for the land speed record between Malcolm Campbell and Henry Segrave
  • The rivalry between LMS Coronation Scot and LNER Mallard to be the fastest rail service between London and Scotland
  • The Great Clipper Races between Cutty Sark and Thermopylae at the turn of the 19/20th century
  • The rivalry between the great flying boats: would Pan Am or Imperial Airways be the first to fly passengers across the Atlantic?
  • The race between the Britain and America to break the sound barrier.
  • The Fast Boats rivalry between the UK and the USA for The Harmsworth Cup in the inter-war years
  • Bentley vs Mercedes and the world of sports cars in the 1920's and 1930's

The series is produced by Taylor Downing. Four directors directed 2 x 1 hour episodes each; Andrew Johnston, Ian Bremner, Chris Warren and Colin Barratt.

Producer Taylor Downing says "This series is a story of endeavour and dedication, featuring the men and women who helped to define the world we live in today. The great surprise to us is that even after many decades we are still finding wonderfully fresh archive material to bring to the screen."
