'Human Rights with Cherie Booth QC'
For Teachers’ TV
First broadcast September 2006

Flashback TV has unique access to Cherie Booth QC, one of the top Human Rights lawyers in the UK, for this exciting series of programmes for Teachers’ TV.  In the course of 3 half hour programmes, Cherie works closely with teachers and pupils across all the Key Stages, helping them grapple with some of the more challenging aspects of human rights and the law. Together, they develop and teach lessons that make this important Citizenship subject accessible and relevant to learners of all ages. These programmes are a must for Citizenship teachers as well as being fascinating for the general viewing public. They have received huge press coverage and are a core part of the Teachers’ TV autumn launch.

The first programme, 'Balancing Rights', look at how Year 5 and Year 6 teachers  Craig and Elaine develop lessons around ideas of fairness and empathy and then move on to notions of balancing rights with other rights. Cherie gets involved with role plays and circle discussions  with the pupils,  as well as a rights-mapping activity and a whole-school Rights Assembly.

'Making Rights Relevant' has Secondary teachers Lee and Simon working with their KS3 classes to explore how human rights are relevant to young people and their local communities.  From visiting their local councillors to unpicking a cyber-bullying case study, the pupils quizz Cherie and use her expertise to help develop their ideas around human rights and the law in a relevant context.

Finally, 'Parliament and the Law' moves into KS4, where teachers Darren and Polly get pupils to examine aspects of some real human rights cases with Cherie. Pupils also visit Parliament and put some challenging questions to Lord Judd as they tussle with the core links between human rights, democracy, parliament and the law machine.
