May 30 2004 Best History D-Day: The Lost Evidence In a week that is laden with programmes broadcast to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the allies' arrival on the beaches of Normandy, it cannot be easy for film-makers to call attention to their differences or idiosyncrasies without drawing accusations of insensitivity. Yet this documentary manages to unfurl what could so easily have appeared a crass gimmick - previously unseen, harrowing footage of the invasion shot from allied reconnaissance planes - with dignity and subtlety. Ultimately, the footage forms the backbone of a documentary that emphasises the human cost of the operation rather than the heroism or political impact. |
